![]() There are a few different areas within Premiere that are useful when dealing with loudness. There are also many third-party plugins that are built specifically for loudness. Most professional NLEs and DAWs come with ways to measure and adjust loudness within your active project. Increasing the LUFS level decreases the dynamic range and usually means more compression, but the audio will be louder overall. Lowering the LUFS level creates more headroom and increases the dynamic range, but the sound quieter overall. Luckily there are some standards and references that provide good guidelines if your project doesn’t have specs provided by a client or distributor. This means that the optimal loudness for a specific project usually depends on where the final product will end up being viewed. However, not all platforms have chosen to adopt the same ITU standard of loudness, which creates some wiggle room for how loud your audio should be. Many plugins and software include ITU recommendations as presets. Loudness standards are primarily created by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union), which continually releases updated standards for audio levels. Music services like Spotify and Apple Music (if enabled) also normalize every song for a more consistent listening experience. YouTube applies its own loudness normalization to every video that gets uploaded. TV broadcast stations have strict spec guidelines for video deliveries, which is why all the commercials you see on TV nowadays are the same loudness. This practice, known as the loudness war, led to even more volume differences and began to sometimes compromise quality when media was so loud that clipping or distortion occurred.įortunately, there are now more standards for loudness. Since humans often perceive louder music as better or preferable to softer versions, crafty professionals began to purposefully make their videos or music as loud as possible. People were creating and publishing content online at whatever volume they wanted, which created a very inconsistent experience for the viewer or listener. When audio and video turned digital around the same time as the explosion of the internet, there were no rules or standards. Why Is There So Much Variance In Loudness? * LKFS is an older and commonly used name for LUFS and represents exactly the same loudness measurement. The scale, ranging from quiet to loud, was created by assessing the physical and psychological characteristics of sound. One loudness unit (LU) is equal to one decibel since both metrics are based on the quantitative measure of sound pressure. Loudness is measured on a scale known as LUFS, or loudness units relative to full scale. Another way to think about loudness is to imagine averaging the volume of loud and quiet parts instead of just focusing on the momentary decibel level. ![]() Our perception of audio is based on a few different variables such as sound pressure, the tones or frequencies of the audio, and the duration of a sound or note. ![]() ![]() Loudness is the perceived volume that a person experiences while hearing audio. Have you ever been listening to music with your speakers turned up, only to have the next song be WAY too loud? Or watching videos online and jumped out of the chair as an advertisement blasted through your headphones after an online video? These happenings are caused by variances in loudness. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What’s Bronny’s game really like? Here are our impressions after watching him as a junior at Sierra Canyon. His junior season ended with a blowout loss to an elite Centennial High School team in a game where James was held scoreless while slowed by a hip injury. As Sierra Canyon was upset by Harvard-Westlake during the CIF Southern Section Open semifinal game, James only finished with four points. His best games - like a 18-point performance against suburban Chicago titan Glenbard West - are often followed quieter performances. While Bronny is certainly an intriguing talent, he hasn’t always had the production to match it. ![]() “It’s just not the way we think of stars, and especially NBA babies.” “To me he’s always been roughly one of the 20 best kids in the class,” said PD Web, director of research & development at Cerebro Sports. Add in the pandemic drastically altering the high school schedule in California, and there simply isn’t much tape on Bronny yet. With so much talent around him, Bronny has essentially been asked to be a role player. James took the floor for Sierra Canyon this season less than a year since he tore his meniscus in Feb. Sierra Canyon had two other top-100 seniors on the roster in USC-bound big man Kijani Wright and Nebraska signee Ramel Lloyd Jr. This year he was teammates with Amari Bailey, the UCLA-bound guard rated as the No. Boston early in high school career before both were selected in the 2021 NBA Draft. He shared the floor with Zairie Williams and B.J. James has played on stacked teams at Sierra Canyon filled with current and future NBA players. He has firmly established himself as a high-major college prospect, but the reality is that he’s far from a typical recruit as the son of one of the greatest basketball players ever. How good is LeBron James Jr.? That question remains up for debate before he’s set to start a critical final season playing on Nike’s EYBL circuit. James has now finished his junior season as Sierra Canyon, the LA-based powerhouse where he’s spent his entire high school career. It was developed in 1912 (during the Taisho period) by Goro Morita in the city of Nagoya, hence the name “Nagoya Harp”. Taishogoto is a much recent Japanese Stringed Instrument than some others on this list. You might find children as young as 2 years old, or elders over 100 years playing the instrument. If you ever visit Okinawa, don’t forget to experience the beauty of this traditional instrument. ![]() Sanshin sounds like a banjo but has a very characteristic warm timbre to it. Besides family gatherings, weddings, festivals, the instrument has been an integral part of the Ryukyu culture, where it’s often associated with Deities and is celebrated as an instrument of legacy. ![]() The music of Japanese islands is very different from that of the Caribbean, and the Sanshin lies at the heart of Okinawan folk music. The Shamisen has a large triangular pick, whereas the Sanshin has a finger-like pick resembling a large hollow fang, which the players wear on their index fingers and pluck the strings. Another major point of difference between them is the pick. Sanshin is the national instrument of Okinawa (one of Japanese islands) and has a body made of snakeskin, as opposed to cat or dog skin on the Shamisen. Similar to Shamisen, it bears close resemblance to the Chinese instrument Sanxian, but with apparent differences. Like Shamisen, Sanshin also means “three strings” in Japanese. However, modern players are finding its places in jazz, pop & fusion music, with some notable players being Reiko Obata, Michiyo Yagi & Miya Masaoka among others. Traditionally, Koto has been associated with romantic music due to its soothing harp-like sound. There are variants with 17 strings (bass Koto) or even more than 20 strings which have gained popularity recently with the advancements in playing styles & the influence of Western pop music. Kotos have been existed in a variety of styles and types, but the most common one uses 13 strings stretched over movable bridges & is made of Kiri wood. He is now known as the “Father of Modern Koto”. Yatsuhashi is credited for the development of a new style of Koto and expanding the repertoire beyond the limited selection of songs. This changed in the 17th century when one of court’s Koto musicians decided to teach Koto to a blind musician by the name of Yatsuhashi Kengyo. It’s fascinating the Koto remained an instrument of the Japanese Imperial Court for a long period of time since it first appeared during the Nara period (710-794). Regarded as Japan’s national instrument, the Koto is a a large plucked zither similar to the Chinese Guzheng. It was even featured in the 2016 movie Kubo and the Two Strings where the main character is seen performing in his local streets. Besides its closely knit relationship with traditional folk music (minyo), it has evolved and adapted to suit modern styles & genres.Ĭontemporary musicians have brought more individuality & personality into their music using the Shamisen for a variety of genres from rock, bluegrass, jazz to even metal. Shamisen has been historically popular both as a solo instrument and as an accompaniment at Kabuki and Bunraku theatre performances. The instrument is played with a large triangular plectrum, called a “baichi”, which can be used to pluck the strings or hit the body to add percussive effects. It’s similar in length to a guitar neck but has no frets or fretboard.Ī distinct feature of the Shamisen is that the first two strings rest on the brass nut, but the third string runs over a cavity on the nut, which is purposefully done to create a characteristic “buzzing” timbre. The neck ( sao) consists of 3 or 4 pieces of wood perfectly fit together and houses three silk or nylon strings. On either side, stretched dog or cat skin is glued to form a drum-like body. Its body ( dō) is made from 4 pieces of hardwood joined together to form a square frame. However, the use of these skins gradually declined and was replaced with plastic. The instrument is believed to have been brought into Japan during the Edo period (1603 – 1868) via the Chinese Sanxian and Okinawan Sanshin.Īlthough both Sanxian and Sanshin used to be covered in python skin, the Japanese started using dog and cat skin for their instruments. Shamisen literally means “three strings” in Japanese. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is the swatch of both Bare Study and Layin’ Low on the back of my hand. ![]() Quick and easy install on my 2009 Road King Classic. ![]() All I can say is the product is topnotch and worth every penny, just wish that I would've installed these sooner, pony up the money and get yourself some!!
